Edward and his brother Guy, for reasons unknown to this writer, abandoned the safet 2 CONC y and comfortable life style of the aristocracy of England to settle in the wilderness and en 2 CONC dure the hardships of the Colonies in 1658. 2 CONT 2 CONT They settled first at New Haven, Connecticut where he worked as a "trader". He was listed a 2 CONC s a member of the prestigious "Order Of The Twenty Nine" and in 1660 he moved from New Have 2 CONC n to New London, Connecticut to became chief of staff to Governor Winthrop. Later that year h 2 CONC e married Lucy Winthrop, the second daughter of Governor John Winthrop. They resided at the W 2 CONC inthrop house, known as the old stone house, that was built in 1648. (Governor Winthrop wille 2 CONC d this home to Edward and Edward in turn willed it to his daughter Lucy that was born in 1661 2 CONC .) Edward became a " freeman" of the colony in 1667. This meant that he could participate i 2 CONC n the government of the colony and hold office. Edward Palmes was a Representative in the ye 2 CONC ars 1671, 1672, 1673, 1674 and 1667 and was sent to England several times on missions for th 2 CONC e Colonies and served under many appointments for the Crown. 2 CONT --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CONC -------------- 2 CONT **Information below provided by Author Linda M. Marrone from her book Our Branch of the Palme 2 CONC s Family (Palmes Hart Marrone), Higginson Book Company Salem Ma** 2 CONT 2 CONT Major Edward Palmes was often written about as a leader in conjunction with the history of th 2 CONC e colonies and it was not always just his dignified actions. One example was the The "New Lon 2 CONC don and Lyme Riot of 1670" that was lightheartedly called one of the "oddest battles" in colo 2 CONC nial history. When the town of Lyme was incorporated in 1668, the colony granted a 2-mile str 2 CONC ip of meadow land along the river " for the use of the ministry of that town ". Unfortunately 2 CONC , the same tract had also been used by the older town of New London for the same purpose. I 2 CONC n August, 1670, thirty men from New London, led by Major Edward Palmes of the local militi 2 CONC a ( some accounts say he was only along as a peacemaker) went to the meadow to cut grass fo 2 CONC r their minister where they were met and challenged by a mowing party from Lyme. "A good man 2 CONC y hard words and some blows were exchanged, pitchforks were raised and rakes were drawn and b 2 CONC attle pursued until the constables of both towns rushed in, and the parties were persuaded t 2 CONC o suspend hostilities and take it to the courts. Griswold, Palmes and Waller agreed to let th 2 CONC e matter be settled by the courts since no serious injuries were sustained on either side an 2 CONC d drinking a dram together, with seeming friendship, every man departed to his home". Accord 2 CONC ing to court records, at the county court in Hartford, various residents of Lyme and Lt. Will 2 CONC iam Waller presented complaints against "The sundry of New London, for attempts by violence t 2 CONC o drive them off their lands, resistance to authority, and assault ". Some accounts of the st 2 CONC ory say Palmes, Martin and Tillison were also charged with "riotous practices". On March 12 2 CONC , 1671, the court imposed fines against both towns and participants of the battle. 2 CONT 2 CONT (There is an interesting and humorous footnote to this already ludicrous story that didn't ha 2 CONC ppen until some thirty years later. In 1700 the governor ordered the Treasurer " to sue any p 2 CONC ersons that refuse to pay their just dues to the Colonies, and to make sale of any lands take 2 CONC n by distress from Maj Palmes, John Martin, and John Tillison." This makes me wonder if the m 2 CONC en from New London, our ancestor Edward included, took their medicine gracefully and paid fin 2 CONC e the court imposed or refused. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1672 Edward Palmes was appointed Captain of the company of troopers ( horsemen) that was f 2 CONC ormed and was a Major in the Indian War in 1675 and was given the power of Magistrate for Ne 2 CONC w London County by the General Court. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Indian Wars: 2 CONT July 15, 1675, the Commissioners of the United Colonies negotiated a peace treaty with the Na 2 CONC rragansett tribe which removed some danger to the settlers at Stonington, Connecticut; but du 2 CONC ring the summer, the Indians of other tribes attacked throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Isla 2 CONC nd. On 18 Sept 1675 the settlers at Deerfield, Massachusetts were massacred. During the autum 2 CONC n the Naragansetts broke their pledge of peace, and the Indians concentrated their strength i 2 CONC n Rhode Island and again threatened Eastern Connecticut. In Feb. 1676, 40 New London Co. volu 2 CONC nteers with their Mohegan and Pequot allies raided the Narragansett country, killing 7 and ca 2 CONC pturing 13. March 27 a third expedition left Norwich, returning 10 Apr. On this campaign Cano 2 CONC nchet, the Narragansett Chief was captured and brought to a council at Anguilla Plain. He bra 2 CONC vely refused to submit to surrender to the English, and when told that he must die, he replie 2 CONC d, "I like it well that I should die before my heart has grown soft and I have said anythin 2 CONC g unworthy of myself". He was executed in the Indian fashion by Oneko and two other Pequot sa 2 CONC chems closet to his rank among his captors. Aug 12, 1676, King Philip chief of the Wampancia 2 CONC g Indians was killed by Massachusetts troop near Mt. Hope, Rhode Island, ending the war duri 2 CONC ng which 13 towns had been destroyed, over 600 homes burned, and more than 750 English men, w 2 CONC omen and children killed. 2 CONT 2 CONT Hubbard, the early historian of the Indian Wars wrote: 2 CONT 2 CONT "The inhabitants of New London, Norwich and Stonington, apprehensive of their danger, by reas 2 CONC on of the near bordering of the enemy, and upon other prudent considerations, voluntarily lis 2 CONC ted themselves under some able gentlemen and resolute soldiers among themselves, Major Palmes 2 CONC , Capt. (Two letter 2 CONC s were written by Major Palmes to the council and are in the New London Records) He was conce 2 CONC rned that items were not being returned to there rightful owners. In August, 1675: "The Counc 2 CONC ill agreed and ordered that the right and division of the captives be left to the decission a 2 CONC nd determination of Capt. John Mason, Capt. T 2 CONC hey had two sons, Andrew 1678, and Guy 1682 both were born in New London. In 1704 Edward ser 2 CONC ved as one of the commissioners that met at Stonington. Marrone from her book Our Bran 2 CONC ch of the Palmes Family (Palmes Hart Marrone), Higginson Book Company Salem Ma** Major Edwa 2 CONC rd Palmes was often written about as a leader in conjunction with the history of the colonie 2 CONC s and it was not always just his dignified actions. One example was the The "New London and L 2 CONC yme Riot of 1670" that was lightheartedly called one of the "oddest battles" in colonial hist 2 CONC ory. When the town of Lyme was incorporated in 1668, the colony granted a 2-mile strip of mea 2 CONC dow land along the river " for the use of the ministry of that town ". Unfortunately, the sam 2 CONC e tract had also been used by the older town of New London for the same purpose. In August, 1 2 CONC 670, thirty men from New London, led by Major Edward Palmes of the local militia ( some accou 2 CONC nts say he was only along as a peacemaker) went to the meadow to cut grass for their ministe 2 CONC r where they were met and challenged by a mowing party from Lyme. "A good many hard words an 2 CONC d some blows were exchanged, pitchforks were raised and rakes were drawn and battle pursued u 2 CONC ntil the constables of both towns rushed in, and the parties were persuaded to suspend hostil 2 CONC ities and take it to the courts. Griswold, Palmes and Waller agreed to let the matter be sett 2 CONC led by the courts since no serious injuries were sustained on either side and drinking a dra 2 CONC m together, with seeming friendship, every man departed to his home". According to court reco 2 CONC rds, at the county court in Hartford, various residents of Lyme and Lt. William Waller presen 2 CONC ted complaints against "The sundry of New London, for attempts by violence to drive them of 2 CONC f their lands, resistance to authority, and assault ". Some accounts of the story say Palmes 2 CONC , Martin and Tillison were also charged with "riotous practices". On March 12, 1671, the cour 2 CONC t imposed fines against both towns and participants of the battle. (There is an interestin 2 CONC g and humorous footnote to this already ludicrous story that didn't happen until some thirt 2 CONC y years later. In 1700 the governor ordered the Treasurer " to sue any persons that refuse t 2 CONC o pay their just dues to the Colonies, and to make sale of any lands taken by distress from M 2 CONC aj Palmes, John Martin, and John Tillison." This makes me wonder if the men from New London 2 CONC , our ancestor Edward included, took their medicine gracefully and paid fine the court impose 2 CONC d or refused. In 1672 Edward Palmes was appointed Captain of the company of troopers ( horse 2 CONC men) that was formed and was a Major in the Indian War in 1675 and was given the power of Mag 2 CONC istrate for New London County by the General Court. The question of the ownership of the spoils of war came up often fo 2 CONC r discussion. (Two letters were written by Major Palmes to the council and are in the New Lon 2 CONC don Records) He was concerned that items were not being returned to there rightful owners. I 2 CONC n August, 1675: "The Councill agreed and ordered that the right and division of the captive 2 CONC s be left to the decission and determination of Capt. John Mason, Capt. After h 2 CONC is wife Lucy died he married Sarah Davis, the widow of Captain John Davis, in 1677. They ha 2 CONC d two sons, Andrew 1678, and Guy 1682 both were born in New London. Ancestry.com also has Linly as possible last. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Lindley's 2 CONT History and Origins 2 CONT Home 2 CONT The name Lindley comes from the old English for a clearing in the midst of lime trees, Lin 2 CONC d - meaning lime tree and Ley - meaning clearing. The place name Lindley occurs at least fou 2 CONC r times in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Old Lindley and Nether Lindley ( between Elland an 2 CONC d Huddersfield), Lindley in the ancient parish of Otley and Lindley in Healingly a lost local 2 CONC ity. There are at least two distinct surnames derived from these and they cannot always be ke 2 CONC pt apart. What follows is an account of the Otley family drawn from various sources. The Lind 2 CONC ley's took their name from the hamlet of Lindley near the township of Otley now represented b 2 CONC y Lindley Hall, a substantial farm on the northern side of the reservoir of the Washburn Vall 2 CONC ey. 2 CONT Lindley was one of the small hamlets of the Liberty of Otley which came into being in 937 A 2 CONC D by a grant to the Archbishop of York by King Athelstan after the battle of Brunanburgh Th 2 CONC e Liberty was cantered around Otley, the market town with church, court house, pinfold the Ar 2 CONC chbishops Hall and chapel. 2 CONT The custom of identifying a person by his place of origin seems to have started in the Saxo 2 CONC n times but did not become common until Norman times and in many cases much later. Early refe 2 CONC rences to the surname may be unrelated individuals, many occur in undated deeds, but it is fa 2 CONC ir to assume that the Lindley name was an hereditary surname from the 1200's. 2 CONT The first Lindley to appear in writing was a Sivard and Thomas de Lindele in the York Assiz 2 CONC e Court Rolls in 1204. Folcasuis, known as Falk appears in the Extent of Otley in 1307, his s 2 CONC on William was in Otley in 1292. 2 CONT Top 2 CONT In the 1200's a certain Edard or Udart de Lindley was farming the land around Lindley Hall, h 2 CONC is grandson William de Lindley was betrothed to Alice Fulk of Wakefield. Alice was well conne 2 CONC cted as her father known as Fulk the Butler was a manservant to the Archbishop of York, a 2 CONC s a result of his connections to the Archbishop Fulk was enabled to buy half the Manor of Far 2 CONC nley as a wedding present for Alice and son-in-law William de Lindley and as a result of thi 2 CONC s it marked the rise to prominence of the Lindley's who throughout the middle ages were to be 2 CONC come an important family in Yorkshire. 2 CONT Sometime in the 12th century the Lindley's moved to the next township of Leathley when the to 2 CONC wnship became part of the Forest of Knaresborough but returned to Lindley after the signing o 2 CONC f the Magna Carta. 2 CONT A Robert de Lindeley was at Lindley in 1378 and is described as an Armiger, a William de Lind 2 CONC ley became Lord of Farnley a township to the east in about 1230, the Lindley's continued as L 2 CONC ords of the Manor of Leathley until the 1524 period when Isobel the sole heiress of Thomas Li 2 CONC ndley of Lindley married Brian Palmes of a York family. During this time the Lindley's becam 2 CONC e established at Otley and are named in many records. 2 CONT Sometime during the 15th century a branch of the family became established at Leathley and a 2 CONC t Skutterskelf in Cleveland, this is shown in the Will of Thomas Lindley gent., in which he m 2 CONC entions his son and heir Percival and William Lindley of Leathley, amongst his possessions h 2 CONC e mentions "My suit of armour in the tower at Hexham". In a footnote of the extract of the wi 2 CONC ll there is a reference to Skutterskelf and the Gower family, So now we have an ancient famil 2 CONC y land owning and with some influence in three locations, Lindley, Leathley and Skutterskel 2 CONC f in Cleveland. 2 CONT Heraldic and Pedigree connections 2 CONT To find out more about the armigerous connections of the Lindley's we must turn to the Herald 2 CONC s Visitations of the 16th and 17th centuries and Glovers Ordinary, these show clearly that th 2 CONC e three branches of the family were arms bearing. 2 CONT The original Arms of the family were "Argent on a Chief Sable three Griffins heads erased Arg 2 CONC ent" this is a simple design and almost certainly of an early period as shields tended to b 2 CONC e of a simple pattern in earlier times. The three branches of the family had differences to d 2 CONC istinguish them from each other. 2 CONT 2 CONT Lindley Hall 2 CONT Lindley of Lindley ARMS: Argent on a chief Sable 3 Griffin heads erased Argent 2 CONT In Thomas Lindley's Will of 1439 he leaves his son and heir Percival his land and property i 2 CONC n Lindley and personal effects of silver spoons and covered cups. Percival his son is mention 2 CONC ed in records of Otley dated June 3rd 18 Edward (1478) that he holds land and tenements in Li 2 CONC ndley by Military service. Most influential people of this period had some connection with th 2 CONC e Military such as Lords of the Manor who, because of the land and property they owned they w 2 CONC ere expected to provide men and arms in support of the King. 2 CONT Top 2 CONT In the Will of Thomas Lindley of Lindley 1439, he mentions 'My Brother Robert' as well as Per 2 CONC cival below. (See notes about Robert Lindley) .( M 2 CONC y thanks to John Lindley of North Yorkshire for the information) 2 CONT Percival's Will of 1495 mentions land in Skegby , Notti 2 CONC nghamshire and he leaves this as well as personal effects to his son and heir Thomas. Other b 2 CONC equests were also made to the Churches of Otley and Leathley and the Chapels of Stainburn an 2 CONC d Farnley. 2 CONT In 1513 Thomas had exchanged land in Stainburn for the Abbeys (Fountains) tofts in Otley. 2 CONT In Thomas's Will of 1524 it shows that he had no male heir, but had two co-heiresses, his dau 2 CONC ghters, Isabel and Elizabeth. The two daughters both married into arms bearing families, Isab 2 CONC el into the York family of Palmes and Elizabeth into the family of Everingham. 2 CONT On the death of Thomas in 1524 not having a male heir the Lindley family of Lindley ceased an 2 CONC d the Palmes family through the marriage of Isabel to Bryan Palmes became the principal owne 2 CONC r of the Manor of Lindley. However, Bryan Palmes only lived for a further three years leavin 2 CONC g his son Francis to continue the Palmes line at Lindley. Isabel Palmes (nee Lindley) then ma 2 CONC rried Sir Thomas Johnson of Northumberland descent. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 28 May 2006 3 TIME 20:32:32 0 @I547@ INDI 1 NAME Margaret /Corbet/ 2 SURN Corbet 2 GIVN Margaret 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1525 2 PLAC Moreton 1 DEAT 2 DATE UNKNOWN 1 REFN LDS 6586291 1 _UID 05667C508FDD3D439C0FB21144D49382BE10 1 FAMS @F187@ 1 FAMC @F198@ 1 NOTE An important marriage in respects to our lineage. The winters of 1921, 1922, and 1923, all three of us went to a one room co 2 CONC untry school with about six other pupils. Our mother taught all 6 grades. We walked to and fr 2 CONC om school. Some of the other students rode horseback to school. Mother and the older childre 2 CONC n would build a fire in the iron stove and we brought water from the nearby stream (or spring 2 CONC ) for the day. The farmers and parents kept a supply of wood for the stove by the door of th 2 CONC e school house. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1924 and 25, the three of us went to school in Chewelah. We walked 2 miles to a small scho 2 CONC ol bus to ride the last three miles. In January of 1926, mother died in a Spokane hospital.
