220. John Robert Lewis

BIOGRAPHY: Documented by Myra (Teddy) Markhart as being at the Battle of Waterloo (1815) and descendents have a portrait of him done much later but showing him wearing the campaign medals he was believed to have gained at that battle.

Occupations listed as: astronomer, lecturer in astronomy (both in later years), harpist, groom in charge of the mail-caoch horses at the Cernioge Inn, soldering, corviser (shoemaker), and a tinman.

He was the third son & fourth child of Lewis Roberts & Gwen Davis of Y Tyddyn. HIs family suported themselves by means of rural husbandry & craftsmanship, including stonemasonry, and his father and eldest brother, Lewis were reputed to be practitioners of the popular versification and ballad-singing which flourished in ne Wales in that period.

He was suupposedly was the cousin of Robert Roberts of Caergybi, bell-ringer, astronomer, author of the Geography of the World adn the prophet of the famous Almanac.

Courtship: John Robert Lewis & Sarah Wood met in the late summer of 1815. John had just returned from the Battle of Waterloo (June 18) and was working in a field with a number of others when the Woods came in sight, moving leisurely along a nearby lane.
